Who we are

Island Hope Foundation is a community‑focused charity based in Zanzibar. We exist to protect, educate, and empower children — and to support their journey into independent adulthood.

Registered office: Mjini Magharibi – Unguja, West ‘B’, Mbweni, House no 11, near Leera School, or such other place as may be determined by the Executive Committee.

Child care & support

Shelter, care, and education for orphaned and vulnerable children — plus health, housing, and wellbeing support through our Child Welfare Committee.

Island Hope Academy

Nursery and primary education today, with a future plan to expand into secondary education. The Board of Education oversees curriculum and academy progress.

Vocational & life skills

Practical skills programs (via Zanzibar Future Organization), plus mentorship and life‑skills support for youth transitioning into independent adulthood.

Our constitutional objectives (Article 2)

  • (a) Providing shelter, care, and education for orphaned and vulnerable children.
  • (b) Ensuring the well-being and development of children in need until they reach adulthood and can become self-sufficient.
  • (c) Establishing and managing an academy for nursery and primary education to promote quality education, known as Island Hope Academy.
  • (d) Expanding Island Hope Academy to include secondary education in the future.
  • (e) Developing vocational training programs to equip individuals with practical skills through the Zanzibar Future Organization.
  • (f) Providing mentorship, life skills training, and support to children transitioning into independent adulthood.
  • (g) Any other lawful activities that further the Foundation’s mission.

Governance

We are governed through clear roles and committees defined in our Constitution.

Responsible for day‑to‑day administration and ensuring objectives are met. Terms: 3 years (re‑election eligible).

Trustees (3)

Custodians of assets and long‑term strategic oversight. Trustees do not run daily operations. Terms: 3 years (renewable).

A Head of Academy is appointed to manage daily operations and report to the Board of Education.

Transparency & accountability

Membership

Membership is open to individuals and organisations that subscribe to our objectives. Categories, rights, and obligations are determined by the Executive Committee and documented in by‑laws.

Meetings

  • Annual General Meeting (AGM): reports + financial statements presented.
  • Executive Committee: meets at least once per year (emergency meetings as needed).
  • Board of Education: at least once per year.
  • Child Welfare Committee: at least once per year.
  • Vocational Training Committee: as needed.

Decisions are made by majority vote; the Chairman has a casting vote in case of a tie.

Finance

We operate as a non‑profit. Funding sources include:

  • Primary funding through zakat contributions from the Founder, Mr. Ahmed Abdulla Ali Al Shaibani.
  • Other donations aligned with objectives, values, and Islamic principles.
  • Revenue from Island Hope Academy.
  • Grants and other lawful sources.

The Treasurer maintains records and presents audited accounts at the AGM. The Foundation maintains a bank account with signatories: Chairman + Treasurer. Separate accounts may be maintained for academy, child welfare, and vocational programs under Zanzibar Future Organization (with oversight by the relevant bodies).

Legal compliance

Where the constitution is silent, we comply with applicable laws. Amendments require a two‑thirds (2/3) majority vote at an AGM or special meeting. Dissolution requires a two‑thirds (2/3) vote at a special meeting; assets transfer to a similar non‑profit organisation as determined by Trustees and Executive Committee. The constitution is to be certified by a notary public.

Volunteer

Volunteer to support learning activities, mentoring, events, or operations. We will match roles with skills and safeguarding requirements.

Partner

Schools, businesses, and donors can partner via equipment, training support, scholarships, or program funding.

Share resources

Donate devices, learning materials, or services. We record and report support as part of our transparency commitments.
